A contract has been awarded for a project to pedestrianise Loughborough town centre. The planned works will create an inner relief road which will divert thousands of vehicles a day from the A6 between Derby Square and Baxter Gate.
A council spokesman commented:
“Demolition of some buildings is due to be undertaken in spring and the Inner Relief Road and its new junctions will be built during the rest of the yearIn the spring of 2014, it is planned to open the inner relief road to traffic. This will remove congestion from the town centre and allow improvements to take place along The Rushes, Swan Street, High Street, Baxter Gate and Derby Square. It is also planned to improve the Epinal Way/Forest Road junction in 2014.
“It is intended to complete the town centre improvements by spring 2015.”
