When Audrey’s long term partner passed away without a Will, she was left facing eviction from her home and accused of trespassing. Here, she explains how Family Law Solicitor Lori Harley helped her when no-one else seemed able to:
A: The situation I found myself in was that for 30 years I had been living in a house with my partner of 45 years, but faced accusations of trespassing by his family, after he passed away without a Will. In the first instance I went to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, who sent me to a law centre, who then sent me to a solicitor in Peckham. I was told that because I wasn’t married to my partner that I had no chance of getting any money from the house. I went to several others who also said that they couldn’t help, before two friends recommended Lori at Edward Hands & Lewis.
A: Lori gave me hope. She told me that I had some rights. I depended on my partner for my home, so I was entitled to something as a dependent, which is how I have received a settlement. She’s been amazing. She really listened and was really reassuring. She gave me confidence that I could get something when I felt like I was in a completely hopeless position. If Lori hadn’t been able to help me I would have been evicted and living in sheltered accommodation by now.
A: She’s been fantastic, anything I needed clarifying or explaining she was happy to do. She’s very kind and very helpful. In fact, I have already recommended Lori and the other ladies in the office, who were all very accommodating – I can’t commend them highly enough.
