Mirror Wills

Mirror Wills are identical documents made by spouses or partners setting out who benefits from aspects of their estates on their death. Mirror Wills allow your wishes to be expressed as a couple and enable you both to set out who should carry out your wishes and who should inherit.

Mirror Wills or Joint Wills?

Mirror Wills are different to Joint Wills because they are identical. A Joint Will is a single document in which both people express their wishes whereas the Mirror Wills are two separate documents, one for each person but they are identical.  Usually, a Joint Will states that the surviving spouse shall inherit all the property of the first to die. After the death of the second spouse, the estate is divided as specified by the Joint Will.

Mirror Wills are individual documents with identical terms except for the names of the testators. Like a Joint Will, these documents usually state that once the first spouse dies the property passes to the second, however Mirror Wills do not have additional provisions that differ.
