First-Time Buyer Stamp Duty Changes: What You Need to Know

15 November 2024 · Emily Hart

The temporary Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) relief for first-time buyers is due to revert in April 2025. If you are planning to purchase your first home, it is important to understand how these changes could affect the total cost of your transaction.

What is changing?

Currently, first-time buyers pay no SDLT on purchases up to £425,000. From April 2025, this threshold reverts to £300,000, meaning buyers of properties between £300,001 and £425,000 will face an additional tax liability.

How to protect yourself

If you are mid-transaction, speak to your solicitor about your expected completion date. Completing before the deadline could save you thousands of pounds.
